    The Text we will be studying this term is 'The Siege' by Helen Dunmore. It is a book set in Second world War Russia in the city of Leningrad and covers such themes as human survival and mankind's determination and adaptability to survive. A small knot of people fight to survive the Nazi siege of Leningrad in a book that feels more like history than it does like a novel. In the summer of , twenty-two-year-old Anna Levin is staying with her father, Mikhail, at his small dacha outside Leningrad, where Anna keeps watch over her five-year-old brother Kolya.

      This book was a "real time" story that take place in a period of about 9 hours. There are a huge number of characters, each with a side story. In the first part of the book each of these characters was introduced with a separate chapter, so the real action didn't start until well into the book.
